Primary Years –
Ages 7-12 years old
One of the most important reasons for exposing children to early second language learning is that all children have natural ability to learn and develop their knowledge of the world. At this stage, the brain is now a super-sponge. It is during this period that the foundations for thinking, language, vision, attitudes, aptitudes, and other characteristics are laid down. Therefore, it is easier to learn a foreign language in these vital years.
In this regard, our school has written a curriculum that caters to the needs of our young learners at this stage. We have divided students into three groups (Level 1,2 & 3) to be able to classify target skills for each level. Level 1 is for students presently enrolled in Grades 1 and 2, Level 2 is for Grades 3 & 4, and Level 3 is for Grades 5 and 6. Each year level English curriculum is carefully analyzed and evaluated by our teachers and consultants to be able to define what’s effective for their language development. Dynamic classroom is the key to meeting their language goals as during these years is where children sit for school examinations and entrance tests.
Activities, stories, poems, role-play, videos are just some of the learning tools we used to encourage primary students to use their higher level critical thinking skills when learning a new language.
